Modern Farmhouse Interior Design

Modern farmhouse design takes the cozy, relaxed rural farmhouse design and adds modern finishing touches like sleek lighting, stainless steel fixtures and other modern design elements such as granite worktops, stainless steel appliances and stainless steel flooring. The basic purpose of a modern farmhouse is to provide the home owner with an attractive, flexible living space that’s built to withstand the typical American weather – dry heat, sun, rain and snow. Contemporary farmhouses have a tendency to be less traditional than older style farmhouses. Modern farmhouses are built with contemporary design factors in mind and can be described as being customized to meet a specific need, budget and design theme or style.

A typical modern farmhouse will have solid wood floors accented by warm carpeting throughout, central heating and plumbing, a one-piece front door and one-arm drawers in every room. Because of the focus on flexibility, the typical farmhouse will have sliding doors which provide easy entry and exit for guests. The majority of modern farmhouse designs will include wide plank hardwood or laminate flooring throughout and exposed brick veneer walls. Some farmhouses may also be built with overhanging eaves, a characteristic of the modern societal movement of building homes in the sky.

In terms of style, most modern farmhouse designs are influenced by either the European Colonial or Art Deco period of style. This is a good thing because it gives the homeowner a chance to display some of their personality and style in the home. The emphasis on flexibility in the structure is another good thing about the modern farmhouse design; if the owner can build it however they want, then they can display whatever they feel like decorating the house with. The focus on showcasing individual personality through the use of modern furniture is a good thing, especially when the owner plans on displaying their own art collection in the living room, parlor and bedrooms.
