Bonham, Texas is home to a variety of shopping events. In July, the city hosts the Quilt Hop. In May, the town holds the Bonham Heritage Day Celebration. September and October bring the Fall Trade Days, while November and December bring the Holiday Market Days. In April, Spring, and June, Bonham hosts the Spring and Summer TradeDays. In the months of May and June, the community celebrates its Independence Day and holds the Bonham Quilt Hop.
The first Bonham Trade Days were held in 1978, but were cancelled due to a coronavirus pandemic. Luckily, the event is back this year on June 4-7. The weekend falls on the same weekend as the Hwy. 82/287 Yard Sale, the largest yard sale in Northeast Texas. For many, the Bonham Market Days are a great way to stock up on crafts, homemade jams, and more.
In 1977, Bryce McIntyre, the Executive Director of the Bonham Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Kiwanis Club, came up with the idea for trade days as a way to raise funds for the city. For years, he tried to persuade every group in the town to host a trade day, but everyone told him that it wouldn’t work. One day, he marched into the Kiwanis Club’s Tuesday noon meeting and began to organize the first Bonham Trade Days.
The city has since allowed the Kiwanis to use Fort Inglish Park for trade days. While the event is free for residents, Kiwanis is responsible for improving the park’s facilities and electricity. In 1978, the first trade day was held at the park and members of the Kiwanis club handed out flyers and leaflets to local businesses. Growth was slow in the early years and McIntyre ran the event alone. The next year, he enlisted Casey Jones, a volunteer, to help complete income tax forms.
The town of Bonham is the home of the Kiwanis Club and has been a staple of the North Texas community for over 30 years.
